When you ask your child to do something, and he comes back with Do it yourself, I think your response should be very clear: I'm not going to do it myself. I told you to do it, and you will have the following consequence until you do it. For younger kids, you might take away a toy until theyve complied. For older kids, you might take away video games, TV, their cell phone or iPod. In the Total Transformation Program, I call this technique, Stop the Show.
Back in the day, everyone wanted to be friends with the kid who had a trampoline in their backyard. There is something so freeing about bouncing up in the air, and its also great exercise. The best part about owning a trampoline is that your kids can have fun within eye-shot of your back door. Trampolines have been recommended for fitness purposes by doctors and coaches for decades. In fact, Trampolines are used by NASA to train astronauts, which is an out-of-this-world detail to get your kids interested.
One thing shouldn't be said to a child is "Stop being a crybaby, idiot, etc" in front of a child's friends. A child may be acting like an actual crybaby or idiot and a parent may think they have every right to say so, but they shouldn't criticize a child's behavior in front of others. It would be better to talk privately to the child about their behavior.
